Community volunteers are always welcome, no matter what their construction experience or skill levels may be. And non-construction volunteers perform a wide variety of Habitat functions, too.
Many local churches and businesses recruit their own members, to volunteer together. See our page on How to Become a Habitat Construction Group to learn how it works.
To volunteer, simply call the HFHMC Office at 256-533-2282 or fill out our online application.
CONSTRUCTION VOLUNTEERS
The Lady Bulldogs on their Habitat workday
- Construction. Building teams can use anyone at any skill level, from beginner to expert.
- Especially Needed! Experienced electricians, plumbers and carpenters.
- Painting. Volunteers aged 14-16 can participate once major construction is done on a house.
- Clean-Up. Help out at the end of the workday.
Most home construction begins at 8:00 am on Saturdays. However, volunteer opportunities are also available on weekdays, especially Tuesday and Thursday workdays.
NON-CONSTRUCTION VOLUNTEERS
Feeding the volunteers
CONSTRUCTION SUPPORT:
- Sign-In. Help construction volunteers sign in at the construction site.
- Lunch for Volunteers. Provide food and drink for other volunteers, with your group or family.
- Phoning Volunteers. Schedule volunteers for a workday, or remind them of their workday.
YEAR-ROUND
- Committee Members. Community members volunteer to help guide the local Habitat organization. Current needs are on the Construction, Family Support and Family Selection committees.
- Lot Maintenance. Volunteers aged 14 and older cut grass and weeds on lots that Habitat will build houses on. A team of two works best: one person on Habitat's riding mower and the other using a push-mower to trim the sides of the lot. Habitat transports all necessary equipment to the site.
- Office Support Volunteers work in the Habitat Office, answering phones and helping with various operational tasks. We are looking for someone familiar with Microsoft Word to help update our policies documents
- ReStore See the ReStore page to learn how to get involved. It's part of Habitat's Environmental Initiative
